Weir. Definitely.

He's a core member - and inflicted his vocal tics and screams on listeners over a much longer period of time, ruining far many more songs. A few excited whoops and hollers are one thing, but hoarse-throat falsetto yelping just ruins it. Lovelight - don't get me started... imho, that song should never have been longer than 5-6 mins, I find all the rap and long endings totally gratuitous, like a never-ending fart. Compared to early 70s versions, what NFA became in the last decade was an utter travesty... bop, bop bop....

wanna REALLY hear something scary for Halloween?

Track down the band's insanely embarrassing, never-should-have-touched-human-ears rendition of "Blackbird." (I think it's from some godforsaken 1988 show).

Paul McCartney spins in his grave every time it gets played and he's not even dead.

I wrote David Gans (as Anonymous) regarding this "godforsaken" show (6-23-88) and the Blackbird back in 2009 - http://staging.dead.net/features/grateful-dead-hour-no-555. Nope, not the Rotterdam Dark Star by any means, but I'll treasure the magic and memories from that night until the day I die.

As to the true subject matter of the thread - I love Bobby Weir, but I've thought his tonsil-shredding screeches at the end of early NFA's and Lovelights were close to intolerable, much harder to deal with than Donna's kick-in-the-ass yelp's.

And in a slightly relevant shifting of the topic I suggest the SirMick matrix of 5-15-77, where Bobby and Donna (and the rest of the band) are in complete and absolutely perfect synch during the screaming Sugar Magnolia Set II closer (my favorite Sugar Mag). http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-05-15.mtx.sirmick.91911.sbeok.flac16 For May 77 fans, the matrix, and not the board, of this under-the-May77 radar show, is where its at. Brilliant show and the closing sequence is crazy.

It's all about the energy.
